He’s like, sleeping beauty. Or maybe more like Snow White.
It’s interesting that people are equating Derek with fairy tale princesses in this shot, because what comes to mind to me is Mary, Mother of Jesus.
My grandmother collected Madonna figurines (among other things), and while the majority were posed holding baby Jesus or with her hands steepled before her in prayer, the rest were posed like this.
It’s a common enough depiction that I kinda don’t know what to do with the parallels. I’ve seen several Mary Magdalens in the same pose but honestly could only look at so many religious icons before I got bored.
I think you’re on to something with this. I’m pretty sure S4 is making references to the Bible too. My thoughts aren’t really shaping into a whole meta yet, but I might post it anyway now you’ve posted this.
From what I remember of my Catchecism, the Holy Mother goes by many names.
With the Infant, she’s invoked as María, Madre de Dios. With her her hands folded in prayer, she becomes Madonna, Queen of Heaven.
With her hands crossed on her chest, however, she becomes María Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows. In this guise, she represents the seven sorrows of her life, and more broadly, her sorrows for the wounded and lost.
Curiously, she is also the patron saint of the abused, especially those having experienced intimate partner abuse.
It’s certainly a little curious that Derek Hale is here arranged in one of the most recognizable motifs in Western religious iconography.
